Contractor Nation Convention: Success Stories, Innovations, & Networking

Friday, September 28th, 2018 by Mallory Finch

Learn. Grow. Share. CN Live.

A few of us took a short break from the busy season here at Baker’s Waterproofing to attend the annual convention hosted by Contractor Nation. This event is now referred to as CN Live. CN Live is a great opportunity to bring hundreds of dealers together from all over North America.

Every year, we leave convention energized and ready to implement new ideas at Baker’s Waterproofing. We value all that we’ve learned from various forums, hands-on training, fellow contractors, and professional speakers.

Awarded a Top Basement Systems Dealer

On Sunday, we traveled from Washington, PA to Hartford, Connecticut. After an 8-hour drive, we were excited to start off convention with a delicious dinner, dealer awards ceremony and inspiring guest speaker.

Only the Top 50 Basement Systems dealers received recognition. Baker’s Waterproofing was awarded No. 11 Basement Systems Dealer in North America. Brian Baker, Owner and President, accepted the award in front of hundreds of attendees.

After the awards ceremony, Kat Cole, COO and President of FOCUS Brands, spoke to Contractor Nation. Kat is an extremely strong businesswoman with an honest, dignified approach. She shared her personal and professional journey to help inspire those that may have a similar story. Kat left us with a new perspective on life by sharing, “If a hotshot was in your position with everything that you had, personally and professionally, what is the first thing that they would do differently?”

Failure and Success

Monday morning, we all gathered at the Connecticut Convention Center to showcase the growth and success of dealers from across the network, unveil new products, and highlight learning opportunities. Afterwards, we split up into our different departmental forums. The forums highlight failures and successes in every department or “gear” of a business. A few topics included customer experience, leadership tactics, recruiting trends, production resources, digital tools, and more.

One Team. Production. Sales. Marketing. Appointment Center. Recruiting. Service.

Monday night, Retired US Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills spoke at the Convention Center. Travis is only 1 of 5 quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. Travis told his powerful story in a way that had hundreds of people laughing with him the entire time he was on stage. His courage, strength, and perspective on life was awe-inspiring. He shared his ongoing battles and how his friends and family help him through it. Travis lives by his motto, “Never give up. Never quit.”

It was a privilege to meet someone in his position that defied the odds. You can check out the documentary on Netflix to learn more about his journey.

Departmental Training

Tuesday was a full day of hands-on training. Everyone at convention was shuttled to the Basement Systems campus in Seymour, Connecticut. Our team split up for the day to attend department-specific classes and network with fellow dealers in our areas of expertise. Best practices were shared and new ideas and programs were launched to the network.

The key takeaways: identify what works in different markets across North America, create and foster relationships with fellow dealers, and re-energize your team.

Time to Celebrate

On the last night of CN Live, it was time to celebrate our dealers’ successes over the past year. This year, the party’s theme was Star Wars. As usual, everyone was eager to dress up and have a little fun! After all, every dealer continues to improve and strive to be the best in the industry.

Our team left CN Live with brand new ideas and programs that we are eager to implement at Baker’s Waterproofing. Here’s to an even better year in 2019!
